The 6 best perfumes for men

Ranked by how often they are the right answer, not by how impressive they are in isolation.

01

Dior Sauvage

Aromatic fougère with amberLaunched 2015€€

The most recognisable men's fragrance of the last decade. Ambroxan gives it a clean, mineral radiance that reads fresh up close and warm at a distance. Safe, potent and widely liked, which is both its strength and its limitation.

02

Chanel Bleu de Chanel

Woody aromaticLaunched 2010€€€

The grown-up alternative to Sauvage. Citrus and mint open it, then dry incense and sandalwood carry it for hours. The EDP is the sweet spot; the Parfum is smoother and closer to the skin.

A bright, airy citrus-and-black-tea composition that feels expensive without shouting. Sold in refillable 100 ml and 200 ml bottles, which softens the high entry price over time. Buy it for the quality of the citrus, not for projection.

Cologne, eau de toilette or eau de parfum?

The word cologne means two different things depending on who is using it. Here is what actually changes between the concentrations.

Fragrance concentrations compared by perfume oil content and longevity
ConcentrationPerfume oilTypical wear timeCharacter
Eau Fraîche1–3 %1–2 hoursBarely there, splash-like
Eau de Cologne (EDC)2–5 %2–3 hoursLight citrus, traditionally reapplied
Eau de Toilette (EDT)5–15 %4–6 hoursFresh and sharp, the daytime standard
Eau de Parfum (EDP)15–20 %6–9 hoursRounder and sweeter, most versatile
Parfum / Extrait20–40 %8–12 hoursDense, close to the skin, expensive

In the United States, cologne is used casually to mean any men’s fragrance, which is why searches like “Dior Sauvage cologne” are so common. In Europe the term keeps its literal meaning: an eau de cologne, the 2 to 5 percent citrus concentration invented in Cologne in the 18th century. Almost every fragrance on this page is an EDT or EDP, not a true cologne.

How to choose a men’s fragrance

Four decisions, in the order that actually matters.

  1. 1

Start with the occasion, not the bottle

An office needs something that stays within arm's reach. A winter evening rewards projection. Buying for the situation you are actually in most often beats buying whatever is trending.

  2. 2

Pick a family, then a fragrance

Aromatic fougères (Sauvage) read clean and masculine. Woody aromatics (Bleu de Chanel) read formal. Citrus and aquatics (Imagination, Acqua di Giò Profondo) read fresh and are hard to over-apply. Fruity chypres (Aventus) are the loudest.

  3. 3

Test on skin, over a full day

Paper strips only show you the top notes, which last minutes. Your skin chemistry changes the drydown, and the drydown is what you and everyone else will smell for the next six hours. Wear a sample for a full day before buying a bottle.

  4. 4

Buy the concentration, not just the name

Sauvage EDT and Sauvage Elixir share a name and very little else. Always check which version a review or a price is referring to.

How to make perfume last longer

  • Moisturise first with an unscented lotion. Fragrance binds to oil, so dry skin loses scent within an hour or two.
  • Spray onto pulse points: sides of the neck, chest, inner elbows. Warmth lifts the scent through the day.
  • Never rub your wrists together. It generates heat and destroys the top notes before they can develop.
  • Add one spray to a shirt collar or scarf. Fabric holds fragrance far longer than skin does, though it can stain light silk.
  • Store bottles away from light and heat. A bathroom windowsill will degrade a fragrance within a year; a drawer will keep it stable for five or more.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best perfume for men in 2026?

For most men, Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum is the best all-round choice. It is versatile, lasts 8 to 10 hours and is liked by almost everyone. Choose Bleu de Chanel instead if you mainly need something for work and formal evenings, or Louis Vuitton Imagination if you want a bright citrus scent for hot weather.

Is Dior Sauvage a cologne or an eau de parfum?

Strictly speaking, no. Dior Sauvage is sold as an Eau de Toilette (2015), an Eau de Parfum (2018), a Parfum (2019) and an Elixir (2021). None of these is an eau de cologne, which is a much lighter 2 to 5 percent concentration.

In American English, though, cologne is used loosely to mean any fragrance marketed to men. So when people search for “Dior Sauvage cologne”, they almost always mean the Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum. If you are choosing between them: the EDT is fresher and sharper, the EDP is sweeter and lasts about two hours longer.

How do you spell Bleu de Chanel?

The correct spelling is Bleu de Chanel. It is frequently mistyped as “bleu de chanrl”, “blue de chanel” or “bleu de chanell”. Two things to remember: bleu is French, so it ends in eu, not ue. And Chanel has a single n and a single l.

Is Louis Vuitton Imagination worth the price?

It depends on what you are buying. Imagination uses noticeably high-grade citrus and the bottles are refillable in Louis Vuitton stores, which brings the cost per wear down over several years. What it does not give you is projection: it stays fairly close to the skin. If raw performance per euro is the goal, Dior Sauvage EDP or YSL Y EDP deliver more for less.

How many sprays of perfume should a man use?

Two to four sprays covers almost every situation. Use two for an Eau de Parfum or anything with strong projection in an enclosed space such as an office or a car. Use three to four for a lighter Eau de Toilette, or outdoors in summer when heat disperses the scent faster. Apply to warm areas: the sides of the neck, the chest and the inner wrists.

Why does my perfume disappear after an hour?

Usually dry skin. Fragrance molecules need oil to bind to, so on dry skin they evaporate fast. Apply an unscented moisturiser first, spray onto skin rather than clothing, and never rub your wrists together, which crushes the top notes. Also note that citrus and aquatic fragrances are naturally shorter-lived than woody or amber ones, so some of what you are noticing is the genre, not a fault.

What is the difference between Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum?

Concentration of perfume oil. An Eau de Toilette is 5 to 15 percent oil and lasts around 4 to 6 hours. An Eau de Parfum is 15 to 20 percent and lasts around 6 to 9 hours. Beyond longevity, the character changes too: EDPs tend to smell sweeter and rounder, EDTs sharper and fresher. The same name can smell like two different fragrances across concentrations.
